Inflammatory Cells
  • basophils:
    • stains readily by basic dyes
    • polymorphonuclear granulocyte containing coarse, large, round bluish-black cytoplasmic granules of non-uniform size and a light staining, slightly lobulated nucleus.
  • neutrophils:
    • stainable by neutral dyes
    • polymorphonuclear neutrophilic leukocyte
  • eosinophils:
    • cell type stained by eosin; commonly used to indicate a eosinophilic leukocyte
  • monocytes: a large leukocyte (9-12 microns, diameter); oval, pale nucleus -- more protoplasm they lymphocytes
  • lymphocytes: variety of white blood corpuscle -- from reticular tissue of the lymph glands; single nucleus; nongranular protoplasm:
    • Two described varieties --
      • small lymphocytes (small mononuclear leukocytes/micro-lymphocytes): about the size of erythrocytes;
      • Large lymphocytes (macrolymphocytes/lymphoblasts): 2-3 times larger than small lymphocytes; larger proportion of protoplasm.
