The basic relationship is (P1*V1)/T1 = (P2*V2)/T2, often rearranged to solve for V2 or V2 = (P1*V1*T1)/(T1*P2). Note that it is always necessary to represent temperature in degrees Kelvin (K)!
1. A gas has a volume of 800 ml with a pressure of 300 torr and at -23C. Let's say we change the temperature to 227C and increase the pressure to 600 toor. The new volume is ml.
2. We start out with 500 L of a gas with the following conditions--pressure is 700 torr and temperature is 200C. If the gas is transfered to a tank and the tank cooled to 20C with an associated pressure of 30 atm, the new volume is L.
3. We start this time with 400 ml of a gas and then cause the following: (a) we change the temperature from 22C to 30C and change the pressure from 760 mmHg to 360 mmHg. The new volume is ml.
4. The starting condition this time is 300L at a pressure of .25 atm and at a temperature of 400K. The volume of the gas at a pressure of 2 atm and a temperature of 200K is L.
5. Under the following initial conditions, pressure is 785 torr and temperature is 15C, a gas will occupy 45.5 ml. If we change the conditions such that the new pressure is 745 torr and 30C, the new volume is ml.
6. This question also test your knowledge of standard conditions (STP). So if a gas, at a pressureof 800 mmHg and 15C, has a volume of 34.2 ml, the gas' volume at standard temperature and pressure is ml.
7. Under standard conditions, a gas has a volme of 488.8 mls. If we change the pressure to 100 atm and the temperature to -245C, we note that the new volume should be mls.
8. The volume of a gas is recorded to be 350 mls at a temperature of 24.2C and at a pressure of 780 torr. If conditions conformed to STP, the volume would be mls.
9. In this problem we are solving for temperature, not volume so the equation will be rearranged. The starting condition is such that the gas occupies 3.25 L at 24.5C and 1825 mmHg. A transition to a new temperature occurs and the steady state volume is not 4250 mls and the pressure is recorded as 1.5 atm. Therefore, the new temperature must be K.
10. 10 L of nitrogen at STP is heated to 512C with a new pressure of 1520 mmHg. Under these circumstances the volume will also change and the new volume is L.
